Fifth Grade Scientist
Our school year is off to an amazing start by incorporating STEM into our class! My science classes spent the day as engineers! They had to construct a the tallest and most sturdiest building that could withstand fierce winds!! Using either paper, legos, or blocks! Then, they measured the dimensions to see who had the tallest! As a class, we answered questions like what challenges might an engineer face in building a tall building? What makes a building slender? What unique challenges do we face in making a tower slender? The students worked collaboratively in groups of four, each tower was measured for height and width and we recorded the data in a classroom chart and compared the data. After each grouped was measured and tested with the wind, we evaluated each teams and offered feedback to the groups. The tallest buildings were not always the sturdiest!!
